Remy eds. Note: This book will stay in the classroom and due to its age (2007) be used rarely.
Course Content: Civics and Economics is a year long course. The course is aligned to the Virginia State Content Standards for History and Social Sciences. The content standards require the students to learn where both the United States Federal Government and Virginia State Government founding principles, how these governments function, what it means to be a citizen and give the students an understanding of economics. The goal of the course is to help the students become engaged and intelligent citizens with an understanding of economics that will help them be successful in life.
Student Expectations: 1. Be seated at your desk during class. 2. Be quiet and listen carefully when Mr. L is talking. 3. Raise your hand to be called on to speak. 4. Listen quietly and politely when classmates are talking. 5. Keep your hands to yourself.
If a student is having a bad day coming into my class let me know ASAP so I can be understanding and give them the space they may need.
Consequences: 1st time: Name on the board. Reminder. 2nd time:First Check beside your name Conference in the hall*. 3rd time:Second Check beside your name Silent Lunch *Continual defiance, disrespect, violence or bullying = Immediately being sent to the office and Major Referral. Five Second Rule for the Five Signal: For transitions or announcements I will raise my hand and count down from five. If many members of the class are disruptive or talking out of turn I will add TENseconds to the end of the class period every time it occurs. *Making a dramatic exit into the hall will result in an automatic second check. If the student is not by the door when I come outside it is an automatic second check.
All Kate Collins Middle School Expectations also apply to Mr. Lingenfelter’s classroom much like how the United States laws apply to Virginians. Think of it as Kate Collins Federalism. That’s right, I snuck a Civics lesson into the syllabus!
Phones: Phones stay in the class phone pocket, your locker or better yet even at home.
Supplies Needed: A three ring binder (I have used ones) 8-9 dividers (We can make them out of paper if needed) Pencils or Pens (I run out of these quickly)
Make Up Work: If absent students have the amount of days absent plus one additional day to turn in work they have missed. They can find out what they missed in the “What did I miss?” folders at the front of the room. There is a folder for each day of the current week and folders after that are for weeks in the past.
Homework: If you do not finish classwork it becomes homework. So basically nothing.
Late Work: Drops a letter grade each day it is late. No longer accepted after five school days.
Grading Policy: Tests: 40% - This is the biggest portion of your grade! Study, look over your notes! Retakes will be offered after school (Tuesdays or Thursdays). Projects/Discussions: 30%- We will work on projects and structured discussions in this class. Be prepared for teamwork! Quizzes: 15%- Some units are too big for one test so we will break them down into quizzes. Classwork: 15%- If you do your classwork, completely and follow the directions this is an easy grade.
